Final Fantasy X as well as other Square(Enix) games store data in a unique way for their PS2 games. Unsure if this is primarily a protection scheme, optimization, or both. Only a few essential files can be seen on the disc with the rest of the data hidden. The program most likely loads a index or table of indexes from a specific sector on the disc. Using a debug copy of the game shows what may be some useful information in terms of file/folder names. Modding files will be extremely difficult which would require rebuilding the whole image. Current goal is simple extraction. Need raw dump of disc to search data from.

Other games that have similar schemes

  • ときめきメモリアルII
  • Star Ocean (PS2 Title)
  • Other Squaresoft/Enix titles based on their PS2 engine tech.
